About

The expertise behind Hydroremote.

Hydroremote

Hydroremote is a New Zealand consultancy specialising in remote sensing, water quality monitoring and lake modelling. We help organisations understand and manage freshwater using the same satellite, sensor and numerical-modelling methods developed and validated in the peer-reviewed literature.

The founder, Dr Mathew Allan, has worked on New Zealand lakes for two decades — first at the University of Waikato’s Environmental Research Institute and the Lake Ecosystem Restoration New Zealand (LERNZ) programme, and now through Hydroremote.

  • PhD — Remote sensing, numerical modelling and ground truthing for analysis of lake water quality and temperature (University of Waikato)
  • MSc — Remote sensing of water quality in Rotorua and Waikato Lakes
  • 2,850+ citations · h-index 15 across 40+ publications and technical reports (Google Scholar)

Areas of expertise

  • Satellite remote sensing of inland and coastal water quality (Landsat, Sentinel-2/3, MODIS)
  • Algorithm development, atmospheric correction and optical water-type classification
  • Coupled hydrodynamic–ecological modelling (GLM-AED, 3-D)
  • High-frequency monitoring buoy data processing and analysis
  • Catchment nutrient load estimation and regional load-target setting
  • Machine learning for sparse water-quality data

How we work

Most engagements begin with a short scoping conversation to define the question and the decision it feeds. We deliver reproducible analysis — typically in R, with results as reports, dashboards or data products — and we are explicit about uncertainty so findings stand up to scrutiny.
