What Hydroremote delivers, and who for.

Hydroremote works at the intersection of Earth observation, environmental monitoring and numerical modelling. Engagements range from a one-off remote-sensing assessment to multi-year monitoring programmes and decision-support modelling for restoration.

1. Remote sensing of water quality

Satellite-derived water quality for lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and coastal waters — for sites that have never been monitored, and for reconstructing history at sites that have.

  • Chlorophyll-a, cyanobacteria risk, water clarity / Secchi depth, suspended sediment, turbidity and lake surface temperature
  • Sensors: Landsat (1999–present), Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 OLCI, MODIS
  • Whole-of-region mapping (tens to hundreds of lakes at once) and long-term trend analysis
  • Optical water-type classification to match the right algorithm to each lake
  • Algorithm development, atmospheric correction and ground-truthing

2. Monitoring & high-frequency sensor data

  • Buoy and sensor network design, siting and commissioning support
  • Processing pipelines for high-frequency data — QA/QC, gap-filling, flagging
  • Trend detection and state-and-trend reporting against NPS-FM / NOF attributes
  • Integration of remote sensing with in-situ records for cross-validation

3. Lake & catchment modelling

  • Coupled hydrodynamic–ecological models (GLM-AED, 1-D and 3-D) to simulate temperature, stratification, oxygen, nutrients and algae
  • Scenario testing: nutrient load reduction, inflow diversion, aeration, fish biomanipulation, climate change
  • Catchment nutrient load estimation and regional load-target setting
  • Decision-support framing so non-specialists can weigh options

4. Machine learning & data products

  • Multi-task and transfer-learning models for water quality where in-situ data are sparse
  • Custom dashboards and reproducible reporting (R / Shiny / Quarto)
  • Data-deficient-lake assessments at regional and national scale

Who we work with

Sector Typical need
Regional councils State & trend reporting, NPS-FM attributes, monitoring design, data-deficient lakes
Territorial authorities Urban lake management, stormwater impacts, in-lake works appraisal
Iwi & hapū Co-governance evidence, mahinga kai / hauanga kai species, mātauranga-aligned monitoring
Research & infrastructure Method development, model coupling, satellite product validation
